Why are mixing and mastering so important?

The short answer is that you want your songs to sound at the same quality standards like all the other songs you hear on the radio, in the car, on TV and home stereo. All these audio systems have their limitation (when it comes to sound dynamics and frequency spectrum), and through mixing and mastering your music gets prepared to sound right. Don’t forget that your competition are the commercial releases and your song has to sound right! There are many aspects to these two processes, and if you want to know more, check out the Mixing and the Mastering chapters in the “The Musician Guide To Music Production” available for free download.
